Thursday morning

ROSEBUD AWOKE to the wonderful feeling of someone breathing on the back of her neck. Drowsy, safe, sheltered, she smiled into the pillow. There was an arm around her waist, a strong, warm arm, and her backside was nestled right up against someone else’s front side. Someone’s naked, hard, intriguing, blazing hot, extremely masculine front side.

Ned. Her eyes shot open. Oh, no. She was in Ned’s bed! With Ned. Naked! She ran a shaky hand down his muscular thigh to be sure. Oh, he was naked, all right.

Snatching her hand back before she ventured into even more frightening territory, she held herself perfectly motionless, but it didn’t help. He was still breathing on her. And she could still feel the tantalizing pressure of what she thought must be his erect manhood pressing into the back of her thin cotton drawers. All she had to do was turn around…

It was torture, agony and heaven, all rolled into one terrifying package.

“I think I’m in trouble,” she whispered, trying to come up with some sort of plan.

How did she get into this fix? She wasn’t supposed to sleep this long. Ghosts didn’t sleep this long! She certainly wasn’t supposed to be here when he woke up.

That was an even worse thought. Had he woken up? She glanced over her shoulder. His eyes were closed, and the rhythmic in and out that she could feel throughout her body every time he breathed told her he was still asleep. Disaster averted. But for how long? Could she possibly get herself out of here before he opened his eyes or figured out that there was a warm body—a warm invisible body—lying between him and the wall?

She was good and stuck where she was. His arm was clamped around her, holding her fast, although she hadn’t really expected it to work that way. Technically, shouldn’t his arm have slipped right through her invisible body?

“I don’t know,” she said under her breath, trying to ease herself out from under him but getting nowhere. “I never slept with anybody while I was invisible before!”

Now that she thought about it, she also had no idea how she’d gotten here. She felt quite sure she’d started out on the other side, behind him, next to the edge of the bed, ready for an easy exit. But now, squashed between him and the wall, she was trapped.

“Mmmph,” he mumbled in her ear, rustling around a little. And then he dipped his head, rubbed his cheek on her arm at precisely the place where her strap had slipped off her shoulder, and made an “Mmm…” noise.

Rosebud stiffened. That had a different ring to it. It was more like how she sounded when she licked the frosting off chocolate cake. Coming from Ned at this particular moment, it sounded dangerous. Like he was enjoying the feel of her next to him. Like he was eager for more.

And like he was waking up.

Closing her eyes, she concentrated and hastily flashed her body into full-color 3-D form.
